British rockers Coldplay are headed to South America to road test tracks from their 4th studio album still in the making.  Even more surprising is the venues they've chosen.  Instead of large arenas and huge crowds the band has selected more intimate venues.  According to the band's website, they personally chose South America because their 2003 trip was such a pleasant one.  (Full Story)

Styx Still Rocking: A new tour, CD and DVD with a little help from 171 teenaged musicians

Thu, 2006-11-30 13:13

Ticketnews.com

“The jig is up, the news is out.”—Styx is back on the road.  The classic rockers are back on tour to support a new album and DVD both titled, “One with Everything”.  If you’ve seen the track list it looks like a greatest hits album with some new tunes.  Not that there is anything wrong with hearing “Renegade” and “Blue Collar Man” again but this is not the case.

Recently, Styx collaborated with the Cleveland Youth Orchestra to give some old classics a face lift.  All members of the 115-piece orchestra and 56-member chorus are between the ages of 13-19.  It’s not often when you see a band collaborate on a song with musicians weren’t alive when the song was first released.  Nonetheless, the latest studio effort from Styx actually sounds really cool for lack of a better word.  In addition to old favorites and new studio cuts, Styx and friends pull of a masterful cover of the Beatles classic, “I am the Walrus”.  Beatles covers are usually sink or swim efforts and this one surprisingly stays afloat. High School Musical: The Concert

Wed, 2006-11-29 13:03

By Scott Timpano
Ticketnews.com

The Disney channel made-for-tv smash hit “Highschool Musical” hopes to translate that success into a nationwide arena tour beginning tonight.  The movie tracks two high school students, Troy the jock, and Gabriella the math whiz.  This approach to the high school genre is hardly novel, yet still manages to captivate a wide spectrum of fans.  Tryouts for their high school musical set the story into motion, but music and drama keep it afloat for 90 minutes.  The stage show remains true to the original movie while making it surprisingly appealing to the concert-going-crowd.  (Full Story)

“Nothing lasts forever…in the cold November Rain,” or when your employment status is determined by a moody, washed up, shell of a rock icon.  Axl Rose fired the Eagles of Death Metal from their supporting act role after a recent Cleveland gig.  Only one night into a 3 week opening stint, the Eagles of Death Metal will be flying back home to the UK a bit early.  Their termination was not done with the professionalism and class one has come to expect from Mr. Rose: “So how’d you like the pigeons of sh*t metal?  Don’t worry, that’s the last show they’ll be playing with us.”

Who is Josh Groban?

Mon, 2006-11-27 18:26

By Scott Timpano
TicketNews.com

He’s selling tickets at a rampant rate but somehow Josh Groban remains relatively unknown on the American music scene.  The 25-year old Los Angeles native won't be unknown for much longer.  His fans are grabbing up tickets like crazy and established musicians are jumping at collaborative opportunities.  Groban’s latest and third studio release Awake boasts quite a guest lineup: Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Dave Matthews, Glen Ballard, Eric Mouquet, John Ondrasik (Five for Fighting), Marius DeVries, David Foster, Imogen Heap and Herbie Hancock.  With album guests spanning such a wide musical spectrum it’s no surprise that the album is Groban’s most diverse sounding effort to date.  (Full Story)

Jamie Foxx Sets Out for First US Concert Tour

Modern day renaissance-man Jamie Foxx is taking a break from filming, stand up comedy, and recording for his first major US Concert tour this winter/spring.  Beginning the day after Christmas Foxx will hit cities from coast to coast in support of his recent studio effort, Unpredictable.  Foxx’s career to this point can certainly be described as such.  No one familiar with his In Living Color ‘Wanda’ character would have ever guessed he’d win an Oscar for his portrayal of Ray Charles.  Unpredictable is Foxx’s second studio release and has already become his most successful.  After showing off his musical talents in Ray, Kanye West’s Golddigger, and Ludacris’s Georgia, Foxx has accrued quite a bit of musical credibility prior to touring.  (Full Story)

An open plea to the American Public

By Scott Timpano
TicketNews.com

Before the National Hockey League melts away from the American sports scene, please go see a game.  The NHL’s lack of popularity lately is really troubling for me.  We’re the same country that doesn’t like soccer because it’s too slow, loves football for the violence, and tolerates baseball because nothing sounds sweeter than a wooden bat hitting a round ball.  Hockey has it all, yet we’re relegating Canada’s reason for existence to the Outdoor Life Network.  C’mon America, this is the sport that gave us Gretzky, Guy, and Gordie.  It also is the sport that ripped the Whalers from my backyard, but as Rocky says in the 4th installment, “If I can change, and you can change, everyone can change.”  (Full Story)

Spring Comes Early to Broadway

Sun, 2006-11-19 15:42

This is usually the time of year where a past success “makes its return to Broadway.”  The new Duncan Sheik/Steven Sater musical Spring Awakening is a welcome addition to the usual winter suspects.  An off-broadway success, “Spring Awakening” now calls the Eugene O’Neill Theatre home.  The story is revamped and modernized version of Frank Wedekind’s 1891 play.

Flying relatively low on the winter concert radar, Haynes will host the 18th annual Christmas Jam, December 16th at the Asheville Civic Center in North Carolina.  Named one of the “10 Best Concerts of the Year” by the London Times, it’s amazing this benefit concert goes so relatively unnoticed.  Haynes handpicks the performers that generally represent a wide rock spectrum.  Headlining and making his Christmas Jam debut is Dave Matthews appearing solo. (Full Story)

Favre to Finally say Farewell

Unless the Packers can right the ship with 8 games remaining, it looks likely that Brett Favre will hang up the cleats for good at the end of the season.  With his impending retirement, fans are taking notice, and demand for the remaining Packers games is reflecting it.  “I can’t stand the Packers,” says avid Patriots fan Mike Ratti, “but Favre is one of those guys that comes by once a lifetime.”  That sentiment is echoed throughout the sports community as #4 makes his farewell tour.   (Full Story)

How Tix4Tonight.com is rapidly emerging on the Las Vegas ticket market
by Scott Timpano
TicketNews.com

The Las Vegas ticket market formula for success is a simple one: obtain desirable tickets and then sell them at a higher price. Tix4Tonight.com did not get the memo. Instead they're selling tickets at half the box office price and are growing exponentially. As recently as last March, their stock (TIXC.OB) was trading as low as $.21 a share. At the market's close on November 8th, it was at $3.05. This October, they sold 56,000 tickets, a triple digit increase from last year.  (Full Story)

"Old Time Rock and Roll" is back in venues across the country as Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band hit the road tonight in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the first of 25 announced stops. After a 10 year recording and touring hiatus, Seger and friends are back with one of each. "Face the Promise" is the new album and the nation's heartland plays home to the first leg of the new tour. Early reactions to the latest studio effort have been quite positive. "This is simply vintage Bob Seger rock and roll music," says Zane Ewton of Rocknworld.com. With the rising popularity of independent and alternative rock, Seger's latest tour is like a classic rock flu shot this winter. Rolling Stone magazine adds, "the strength of the album...[is] how Seger fearlessly remains Seger." (Read More)
